Bedtime Reading – EMC’s ISM Book

If you're a virtualisation enthusiast like myself, you'll understand that we don't only need to know about virtualisation. We also need to know about all of the other IT areas that are incorporated into our virtual environment. Storage is a massive part of this. Whether your using iSCSI, FC SAN, NFS or even local storage, it's crucial to make sure you have your storage set up correctly to get the best performance, reliability and availability for your data. Storage isn't one of my strengths. Even though I know the basics, I feel, and have also been told that this can hold me back in becoming a better virtualisation specialist.

Fortunately whilst visiting EMC at the GestalIT TechFieldDay earlier in April, each of the delegates, including myself were given a copy of EMC's book; Information, Storage And Management.

I'm not a fan of reading books, especially technical books, sometimes I find the content hard to take in and I easily get distracted. But not with this book. So far I've found it really easy to read, it doesn't blind you with science. It starts off at basic level, so if you are new to storage this is a great book for you.

Here's what fellow blogger Bas Raayman has to say about the book. (Recorded at EMC World 2009)

Bas likes it! And what Bas says, goes!

The book is also available as an eBook for the Kindle. To find where you can order it from click here

  • That video will keep haunting me, won't it? ^^

By the way, it's also not bad as a basis for EMC entry level certification. Those who might be wondering, I can assure you that this book isn't geared towards EMC specific products. They are mentioned in there on some occasion, or they display EMC's implementation of the technology in the last 3 or 4 pages of a chapter, but it is much more about how these components all work and what comes along with them (stuff like ILM or security are also covered).

    • Thanks for the extra info Bas. I am possibly thinking about doing an entry level storage exam, so it's good that this book will feed me a lot of the relevant information need. Any recommendation on which certs are best for storage beginners?

Oh and thanks for letting me use that video! ^^

      • That's a real hard one for me. The problem with a lot of the storage certifications is that they are bound to one general technology. You do get a good background, but it's still usually on how one vendor implements that technology. I would probably say that the EMC E20-001 (which is the ISM certification from EMC) is actually quite good in checking your overall understanding of how these technologies work, and they check if you have a deeper understanding of what they tried to transfer from the book to your brain.

  • Hey!!!                   This tips from all of you is very useful.we are thankful for your team. your ideas are so amazing.                  Thanks.....
